Voltammetry

A general term for the study of electrolysis phenomena by analyzing the current-potential curves obtained when electrolysis of minute concentrations of a substance to be electrolyzed is performed in the presence of a large amount of supporting electrolyte, using a microelectrode as the indicator electrode and a non-polarizable electrode as the counter electrode. J. Heyrovský called the electrolysis method using a dropping mercury electrode as the indicator electrode polarography, but the term voltammetry was introduced by I.M. Kolthoff when he used a rotating platinum electrode as the indicator electrode. Currently, the term is widely used when a microelectrode other than a dropping mercury electrode is used as the indicator electrode.

微小電極を指示電極とし，非分極性電極を対極として，多量の支持電解質の存在下で，微小濃度の被電解物質の電解を行うと得られる電流-電位曲線を解析することにより電解現象を研究する学問の総称．J. Heyrovský(ヘイロフスキー)は指示電極として滴下水銀電極を用いて行う電解法に対しポーラログラフィーとよんだが，ボルタンメトリーはI.M.Kolthoffが白金回転電極を指示電極として用いる際に導入した用語である．現在では，指示電極として，滴下水銀電極以外の微小電極を用いた場合に対し広く用いられる．
