It was commonly used in the middle of ancient times as a water bucket, vegetable bucket, sushi bucket, or a furnishing such as a fire bucket or a waist bucket. It was not until the late Middle Ages that barrel-making craftsmen became independent, and the barrel-making troupe was organized under the management of Daijoin Temple at Kofuku-ji Temple in Nara.
