…Oda Nobunaga was the first ruler to recognize the existence of a new world and culture other than China, India, and Japan through the missionaries. The Toyotomi government initially seemed to have inherited the same attitude, but in June 1587, after subjugating Kyushu, it issued a five-article ban on Christianity (Banten Expulsion Order), criticizing the missionaries for converting the people of the provinces and counties to Christianity and destroying shrines and temples, forbidding their propagation as a "wicked law," and ordering the expulsion of the missionaries. However, this ban allowed trade and travel between the "Christian provinces" freely as long as they did not interfere with the gods and Buddhas. …
