Junzo Karaki

Critic. Born in Nagano Prefecture. Graduated from the Department of Philosophy at Kyoto Imperial University. He established himself as a unique critic by combining philosophical thought, exploration of human nature, and artistic sensibility. In 1932 (Showa 7), he suddenly attracted attention with his "Introduction to Modern Japanese Literature." During World War II, he published "The Spirit of Ogai" (1943), a labor of love that pursued Ogai in the history of modern Japanese thought through the analysis of historical novels and biographies. After the war, he participated in the launch of "Tenbo" magazine, and published works such as "An Attempt at Modern History" (1949), and eventually "Literature of the Middle Ages" (1955). He went on to rediscover the Middle Ages with works such as "Sen no Rikyu" (1958) and "Mujo" (1959), and also published a collection of stories based on the Middle Ages, "Onin Shiwa" (1966). He later looked back to ancient times in works such as "An Essay on Ancient History" (1969), but in his final years he was interested in nuclear issues.

評論家。長野県出身。京都帝国大学哲学科卒業。哲学的思索と人間性の探究、芸術的感受性の結び付きによる、独自な評論家としての地歩を築いた。1932年（昭和7）『現代日本文学序説』で一躍注目された。第二次世界大戦下の『鴎外(おうがい)の精神』（1943）は、近代日本の思想史上の鴎外を歴史小説、史伝の分析によって追究した労作。戦後は『展望』創刊に参加、『現代史への試み』（1949）などがあるが、やがて『中世の文学』（1955）。『千利休(せんのりきゅう)』（1958）、『無常』（1959）などの中世の再発見へと進んでいき、また中世に材を得た小説集『応仁(おうにん)四話』（1966）刊行のことがあった。その後、『古代史試論』（1969）など古代への遡及(そきゅう)もあるが、最晩年の関心は核問題にあった。
