Portales, Diego José Victor
Born: June 26, 1793, Santiago
[Died] June 6, 1837. A Chilean politician and businessman from Valparaiso. He made his fortune in 1824 by running a tobacco and alcohol monopoly. In 1830 he joined the Conservative Party, and in 1831 he became chief cabinet minister under President J. Prieto, and for the next seven years he ruled as a virtual dictator. In 1833 he promulgated a new constitution, limiting the right to vote to the educated and propertied classes, placing importance on Catholicism, and establishing the principle of a centralized oligarchy. As a result, political stability and economic and cultural prosperity were achieved, but he himself declared war on Peru in 1836 in opposition to the formation of the Bolivian-Peruvian Union, and although he was victorious, he was shot dead by his subordinates in 1837.
