An inland waterway in the northern European part of Russia that connects the upper Volga River to the Baltic Sea. Formerly known as the Mariinskaya Waterway, it runs north from the northern end of Lake Rybinsk on the upper Volga River, passing through the Sheksna River, Lake Beloye, the Kobzha River, the Mariinsky Canal, the Vychegda River, Lake Onega, Lake Ladoga, and the Neva River before reaching the Baltic Sea. It has a total length of over 1,100 km. Its shallowest point is 4 m deep. Most of it was opened in the first half of the 19th century using natural rivers, but some parts were dredged and the Mariinsky Canal was excavated.
