A general term for birds in the family Dendrocolaptidae, order passerines. This family consists of about 50 species, with about 20 species, including 4 endemic to Central America, and 46 species, excluding the 4 mentioned above, found in South America. They are relatively closely related to the family Siberidae, and some scholars group them together in one family. Overall length is 14-36 cm. Most species have a very uniform overall color of yellowish brown, brown, or gray. The shape of the beak varies considerably depending on the species, with some being straight and thin and pointed, others being chisel-shaped and sharp like the beaks of woodpeckers, and others being long and thin and curved.
