A large river in Russia. It originates in the Valdai Hills west of Moscow, flows east, then turns south, and flows southeast from Volgograd into the Caspian Sea. It forms a large delta at its mouth. It is the longest in Europe, with a total length of 3,688 km. Its drainage area is 1.38 million ^km2 . It freezes over from the end of November to early April. It has artificial lakes such as Lake Rybinsk, Lake Kuybyshev, and Lake Volgograd, and hydroelectric power is thriving. Regular ships run from Rzhev west of Moscow to the mouth of the river, and the Volga-Baltic Canal and the Volga-Don Canal pass through it, making it the main artery of river traffic in Russia. It is rich in fish such as sturgeon. Its main tributary is the Oka River. Since the Middle Ages, it has flourished as a trade route connecting Northern Europe and Central Asia. It has long been affectionately known as "Mother Volga," and has been the subject of literary works and paintings by artists such as Nekrasov, Gorky, and Repin.

ロシアの大河。モスクワ西方のバルダイ丘陵に発して東流，南に転じ，ボルゴグラードから南東流してカスピ海に注ぐ。河口に大デルタを形成。全長3688kmでヨーロッパ第一。流域面積は138万km²。11月末〜４月初めの間氷結。ルイビンスク湖，クイビシェフ湖，ボルゴグラード湖などの人造湖があり，水力発電が盛ん。モスクワ西方のルジェフから河口まで定期船が連絡，ボルガ・バルト海運河，ボルガ・ドン運河が通じ，ロシアの河川交通の大動脈をなす。チョウザメなど魚類も豊富。おもな支流はオカ川。中世以後北ヨーロッパと中央アジアを結ぶ交易路として繁栄。〈母なるボルガ〉として古くから親しまれ，ネクラーソフやゴーリキー，レーピンなどの芸術家によって文学作品や絵画の題材とされている。
