A giant god in Greek mythology. Son of Iapetus and Clymene, he was one of the Titans. His brothers were Menoetius, Prometheus, and Epimetheus. According to one theory, he was the son of Uranus, and therefore the brother of Cronus. Atlas, who belonged to the generation of gods before the Olympians, fought against the Olympian gods with the other Titans, and as a punishment, Zeus ordered him to hold up the firmament on his shoulders. He is usually said to have lived in the country of the Hesperides at the western edge of the world, so the historian Herodotus called the mountain range of North Africa Atlas. It is said that after slaying the monster Gorgon, Perseus showed Atlas the head of Medusa, and turned him into a rock. Atlas had two daughters, Pleione (the Pleiades and Hyades) and Hesperides (the Hesperides). Dione is also thought to be his daughter, and he had two sons, Hyas and Hesperus. Later legends give Atlas various interpretations, including astronomer (hence the name "map"), shepherd, and king.
