This is an empirical rule that shows the relationship between computer performance and price. It was proposed around 1953 by H. Grosch, a developer of second-generation computers. It states that "computer performance is proportional to the square of the price." This law no longer holds true as the price of a CPU becomes roughly proportional to its performance, but it still holds true in areas where input/output devices make a large contribution.
