A city in the central south of Fukuoka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1972. Most of the city is the plains of the Homan River basin, a tributary of the Chikugo River. Rice, wheat, and vegetable cultivation, as well as livestock farming, are thriving here. Orchids and seedlings are also produced here. Ogori, where the Amagi Railway and Nishitetsu Tenjin-Omuta Line intersect, has become a commuter town for Fukuoka City, and in recent years construction has been underway on the Ogori-Chikushino New Town, which straddles Chikushino City. 福岡県中南部の市。1972年市制。大部分は筑後川の支流宝満川流域の平野で,米麦作を中心に野菜栽培,畜産が盛ん。洋ラン,苗木種苗も産する。甘木(あまぎ)鉄道,西鉄天神大牟田(おおむた)線が交わる小郡を中心に福岡市のベッドタウン化が進み,近年は筑紫野市にまたがる小郡・筑紫野ニュータウン建設が進む。大分自動車道が通じる。45.51km2。5万8499人(2010)。
