[Poetry]
The new poetry of the Spanish Renaissance began with Garcilaso de la Vega, who introduced the sonnet and other Italian forms, and his "Pastorales" are a splendid work that combines the emotion of love, beautiful descriptions of nature, and musicality with perfect form. This Italian school of poetry later merged with the Spanish tradition and split into the Salamanca school led by Luis de Leon, which emphasized sober sounds and deep spirituality, and the Sevillian school led by Fernando de Herrera (1534-97), which emphasized formal beauty and splendor. Then came the emergence of Luis de Góngora, the greatest poet of the Spanish Baroque.
