A marine fish belonging to the family Gadiformes of the class Osteichthyes. It is also called baleen. It is found in Iwate Prefecture on the Pacific coast, and south of Toyama Prefecture on the Sea of ​​Japan coast, the Okinawa Trough, the East China Sea, the Korean Peninsula, and Taiwan. Its body is cylindrical, with an elongated, string-like tail. It has no caudal fin. Its snout protrudes sharply and has a strong spine at its tip. The underside of its head is completely covered with scales. The scales on the sides of its body have 3-6 radial spines, but the scales on the back of the head and ventral surface only have one ridge. It has a black light-emitting organ just before the anus, which extends almost halfway between the anus and the base of the pelvic fin. It is about 70 centimeters long. They live on sandy, muddy bottoms at depths of 240 to 1,000 meters, feeding on krill, shrimp, worms, etc. They are caught using bottom trawls and are used as raw materials for fish paste products.

硬骨魚綱タラ目ソコダラ科に属する海水魚。ヒゲともよばれる。太平洋側では岩手県、日本海側では富山県以南、沖縄舟状海盆(しゅうじょうかいぼん)、東シナ海、朝鮮半島、台湾に分布する。体は円筒状で、尾部は延長して紐(ひも)状。尾びれはない。吻(ふん)は鋭く突出し、その先端に1本の強い棘(とげ)を備える。頭の下面は全面が鱗(うろこ)で覆われる。体側の鱗には3～6本の放射状棘列(きょくれつ)があるが、頭部の背面と腹面の鱗では1本の隆起線しかない。肛門(こうもん)の直前に黒色の発光器があり、肛門と腹びれ基底の中間近くまで伸びる。体長約70センチメートル。水深240～1000メートルの砂泥底にすみ、オキアミ類、エビ類、ゴカイ類などを捕食する。機船底引網で漁獲され、練り製品の原料となる。
