A Chinese poet of the mid-Edo period. His given name was Kuniyoshi and his pen name was Keiran. He was born in Edo and lived there until middle age, where he established himself as a professor of Confucianism. During that time, he became acquainted with Arai Hakuseki. In 1719 (Kyoho 4), he was employed as a Confucian scholar by the Akashi Domain, and lived there until his death. He was a free-spirited and frank person, and studied Tang and Song poetry in search of a style of poetry that would allow him to express himself, but around the age of 40, he discovered a style of poetry that was not bound by established forms and freely expressed feelings. After moving to Akashi, he gained a high literary reputation, and, combined with his long life, he was deeply respected by poets in Kyoto and Osaka. His works include "Seiganshu" and "Seigan Sensei Tomonsho."
