The supreme leader of Iran. Known as an authority on Shiite Twelverian theology and jurisprudence. He was exiled in 1963 for criticizing the policies of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, but returned to the country in 1979 as the Iranian Revolution progressed. He established the Islamic Republic of Iran and assumed the position of supreme leader based on the theory of "rule by jurists" that he preached in his 1970 book.

イランの最高指導者。シーア派の十二イマーム派神学・法学の権威として知られる。モハンマド・レザー・パフラビー国王の政策を批判し，1963年国外追放となったが，イラン革命の進展にともなって1979年に帰国。イラン・イスラム共和国を樹立し，1970年執筆の著書で説いた〈法学者の統治〉論に基づいてその最高指導者の地位に就いた。
