...After becoming a US territory under the Treaty of Paris in 1898, Puerto Rico switched to civilian rule in 1900, and in 1917 the residents became US citizens. However, due to growing demands for autonomy or independence, the US government appointed the first Puerto Rican governor in 1946, and the first popularly elected governor in 1948. Under the first popularly elected governor, Luis Muñoz Marin (1898-1980), economic development progressed rapidly, and in 1952 the current Constitution of the Free State of Association was enacted by a referendum, determining Puerto Rico's current status. The Free State of Association elects its governor and both senators and legislators, and has autonomy over its internal affairs, but sovereignty lies with the United States and it is a territory of the United States. ...
