A politician from Mytilene, on the island of Lesbos in the Aegean Sea, who lived from around 650 to 570 BC. He is counted among the "Seven Sages" of Greece. Together with the brothers of the poet Alcaeus, he overthrew the tyranny of Melanculas and ruled Mytilene as aismunes (mediator) for ten years from around 590 BC. He is thought to have come from a powerful aristocratic family, but he possessed democratic insight comparable to that of the contemporary Athenian reformer Solon.
