Pittakos (English spelling)

Japanese: ピッタコス（英語表記）Pittakos

A politician from Mytilene, on the island of Lesbos in the Aegean Sea, who lived from around 650 to 570 BC. He is counted among the "Seven Sages" of Greece. Together with the brothers of the poet Alcaeus, he overthrew the tyranny of Melanculas and ruled Mytilene as aismunes (mediator) for ten years from around 590 BC. He is thought to have come from a powerful aristocratic family, but he possessed democratic insight comparable to that of the contemporary Athenian reformer Solon. [Ando Hiroshi]

エーゲ海に浮かぶレスボス島のミュティレネの政治家。ギリシアの〈七賢人〉の一人に数えられている。詩人アルカイオスの兄たちと力をあわせて，メランクロスの僭主政を打倒し，前590年ころから10年間アイシュムネテス(調停者)としてミュティレネを治めた。彼は有力な貴族の出身と思われるが，同時代のアテナイの改革者ソロンに比べられる民主的な識見の持主だったといえよう。【安藤弘】
