A port city in Rio Grande do Sul state, southern Brazil. Population 157,608 (1991). Located on the south shore of Lake Patos, it has a good harbor. As a distribution center for the livestock farming areas of the Gaucho Plain (Pampas) in the southern part of the state, it forms a pair of urban areas with Pelotas (54 km to the north, population 260,510, 1991), and its port directly connects the area to the direction of São Paulo. Beef and seafood processing industries are thriving, and meat products, rice, wheat, soybeans, etc. are mainly exported from the port to the direction of São Paulo.
