A port city in Rio Grande do Sul state, southern Brazil. Population 157,608 (1991). Located on the south shore of Lake Patos, it has a good harbor. As a distribution center for the livestock farming areas of the Gaucho Plain (Pampas) in the southern part of the state, it forms a pair of urban areas with Pelotas (54 km to the north, population 260,510, 1991), and its port directly connects the area to the direction of São Paulo. Beef and seafood processing industries are thriving, and meat products, rice, wheat, soybeans, etc. are mainly exported from the port to the direction of São Paulo. ブラジル南部,リオ・グランデ・ド・スル州の港湾都市。人口15万7608(1991)。パトス湖の南岸にあり,良港をもつ。州南部に広がるガウショ平原(パンパ)の牧畜地帯の集散地として,ペロタスPelotas(54km北にある。人口26万0510,1991)と一対の都市部を構成し,港としてこの地をサン・パウロ方面と直結させている。牛肉,海産物の加工工業が盛んで,港から肉製品,米,小麦,大豆などをおもにサン・パウロ方面に輸出する。
