[Legal Issues]
The textbook lawsuit follows the Work Evaluation Trial (Work Evaluation Struggle) and the School Test Trial, which were fought by teachers' unions over performance evaluations for teachers and nationwide simultaneous academic achievement tests. Fundamental Law of Education Moreover, since its inception, the case has attracted a great deal of public attention as a constitutional trial over Article 21 (prohibition of censorship), Article 23 (academic freedom), Article 26 (right to education), and even Article 31 (guarantee of due process) of the Japanese Constitution.
