A Russian aristocrat and Slavophile thinker. He was also known as a polemicist and had a wide range of intellectual interests, but the core of his thought was ecclesiology. For him, the church was an organic entity (sobornost) in which individuals free in faith were bound together by mutual love, and he saw his ideal in the Russian Orthodox Church before Peter's reforms. He also believed that the character of the church determines the essence of society, and he glorified the ancient communal Russia that had been under the protection of the Orthodox Church, recognizing Russia's world-historical mission in its restoration ("The Church is One").
