Issyk-Kul (Lake)
This lake is located in a rift valley at an altitude of 1,609m in the Tian Shan Mountains in the northeastern part of the Kyrgyz Republic in Central Asia. There are many rivers flowing into the lake, but no outflowing rivers. It has an area of 6,280 km2, an average depth of 279m, a maximum depth of 702m, a water volume of 1,730 km3 , and a salinity of 0.6%. The water temperature is just over 20°C in summer and close to 3°C in winter, so it does not freeze. Issyk-Kul means "hot lake" in Kyrgyz. There are health resorts such as Aksu on the lake shore, and many tombs of ancient nomadic peoples such as the Saka people. [Ono Kikuo]
