The capital of Mauritius, an island nation in the southwestern Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar. Population 145,000 (1994). A port city on the northwest coast of Mauritius, it is the island's only trading and fishing port. It has a good natural harbor and exports sugar, the country's main product, as well as light industries such as rum, wine, tobacco, textiles (Mauritian hemp), and food. It is possible that Arabs or Indonesians arrived on the island before Portuguese ships discovered it in the early 16th century, but when the Dutch made it a port of call in 1598, the island was uninhabited.
