Shuzenji Temple

Japanese:
Shuzenji Temple

This is a Soto sect temple in Izu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. It is also written as Shuzenji. Its name is Shoro-san. It is commonly known as O-Kubō-san. It was founded by Korin, a disciple of the great master Kobo Daishi Kukai. It was originally a Shingon sect temple, but when the Song zen monk Rankei Doryū came from Kamakura and entered the temple during the Kenchō era (1249-56), it became a Rinzai sect temple, and in 1489 (Entoku 1), it was converted to a Soto sect temple by Ryūkei Hanshō. Minamoto no Noriyori was imprisoned in this temple by his brother Yoritomo, and in 1193 (Kenkyū 4) he was attacked by Kajiwara Kagetoki and committed suicide. In 1204 (Genkyu 1), Minamoto no Yoriie, who was imprisoned by Hojo Tokimasa, was killed here. Okamoto Kidō's play Shuzenji Monogatari, which depicts this historical event, is famous. The Treasure Museum has an old mask that is said to have been made by the mask maker Yashaō, as well as the Hannyaharamitta Sutra. Nearby, Shigetsu-ga-Oka is home to the Shigetsu Hall (also called the Issaikyodo Hall, as it houses the Song edition of the Issaikyo Sutra), which was built by Hojo Masako to pray for Yoriie's soul, and Yoriie's grave.
