Yugei

A title for warriors who served as guards in the ancient imperial court. As opposed to the Toneri who carried swords, this may have been a title for those who carried bows and arrows. The Yugeibe were placed to support them. It is difficult to distinguish between Tomo and Bemin, and even those of the kokuzo class are recorded as Yugeibe (Yugeibe) (Nihon Shoki, article on the 12th year of Emperor Bidatsu). It is written that Otomo Muroya led 3,000 Yugeibe (Ryo no Shuge, quoted from the official document of 811), and he was under the command of the Otomo clan. Under the Ritsuryo system, the name and role of the Emonfu was inherited as "Yugei no Tsukasa".

古代宮廷の警備に従事した武人の称。舎人(とねり)が太刀を佩(は)くのに対して、弓矢を負う者の呼称か。その資養に靫負部(ゆげいべ)が置かれた。靫負（伴(とも)）と靫負部（部民(べみん)）の区別は難しく、国造(こくぞう)クラスの者も靫部(ゆげいべ)（靫負部）と記される（『日本書紀』敏達(びだつ)12年是歳条）。大伴室屋(おおとものむろや)が靫負3000人を率いたとあり（『令集解(りょうのしゅうげ)』所引弘仁2年（811）官符(かんぷ)）、大伴氏の配下にあった。令制下では衛門府(えもんふ)の呼称「靫負司(ゆげいのつかさ)」にその名称と役割が継承される。
