Float-and-sink analysis

A test conducted to evaluate the possibility of gravity separation of coal, ore, etc. The raw materials for gravity separation, coal and ore, have a single edge, so perfect separation results cannot be achieved even with ideal gravity separation. Therefore, in order to predict and evaluate the results of gravity separation, it is necessary to investigate the possible limits of separation. Data showing this possible limit of separation is called washability. The purpose of float-sink analysis is to evaluate washability. Float-sink analysis is performed by separating coal or ore samples using a high-density liquid and examining the weight percentage and grade of each specific gravity class.

石炭や鉱石などの比重選別の可能性を評価するために行われる試験。比重選別の原料となる石炭や鉱石には片刃が存在するため，理想的な比重分離によっても完全な選別結果を達成することはできない。そこで比重選別による選別成績の予測や評価を行うためには分離の可能限界を調べることが必要となる。この分離の可能限界を示すデータを可選性washabilityという。可選性の評価が浮沈分析の目的である。浮沈分析は石炭や鉱石の試料を高比重の液体により分別し，各比重区分ごとの重量割合と品位を調べることによって行われる。
