An industrial city in the Moscow Oblast in the western part of the Russian Federation. Population 195,900 (1999). It is located on the banks of the Pakhra River in the southern suburbs of Moscow. It became the administrative center at the end of the 18th century, but the town's development began in 1900 when a factory for the American company Singer Sewing Machines was built there. After the Russian Revolution (1917), heavy industry developed and the population increased. Currently, the main industries are sewing machines, boilers, cables, storage batteries, secondary processing of non-ferrous metals, cement, and firebricks.
