A Roman glass vase in the British Museum. Its provenance is unknown, but in the 17th century it was in the Palazzo Barberini in Rome, and at the end of the 18th century it was purchased by the Portland family and transferred to the British Museum in 1810. The importance of this glass vase lies in its technique and iconography. The technique used is to make the body out of blue glass containing copper oxide, then immerse the body in liquid white glass made from antimony, layering a white layer about 0.5 mm thick on the surface, and after it has cooled, scraping off the white glass layer, leaving only the image.
