Old Sarum

…Located on the River Avon, it was a trading centre for produce from the surrounding rural areas. It originally originated as Old Sarum, a settlement on the nearby hills, and was an important city in military, political and religious spheres since ancient times. In 1075, a bishopric was established in the city, and in 1086, William I gathered landowners from all over the country in the nearby fields and had them swear allegiance to him (the Salisbury Oath). In 1116, Henry I also had his subjects swear to recognise his son William as his successor. …
