1880‐1958 A German psychiatrist and one of the leading figures in the fields of understanding psychology and psychopathology. He entered the psychiatry department at the University of Heidelberg in 1905 and stayed there for about 30 years, contributing to the rise of the Heidelberg School. His academic career was marked by difficult times, but was permeated with a critical spirit and sincerity, and he was described by his junior colleague Jaspers as "the scientific conscience of psychiatry."
