…However, unlike England, France was unable to dominate the world market, and so cotton did not hold an overwhelming share in the country, with linen and silk textiles playing an important role. The silk textile industry had a higher growth rate than the cotton industry in the early stages of the Industrial Revolution, which is a good example of the country's economic structure, which was oriented toward the production of luxury goods rather than mass consumer goods. The iron industry also grew rapidly after the introduction of the puddle process around 1820.
