正式には〈柔道整復師〉という。骨折，脱臼(だっきゅう)，捻挫(ねんざ)，打撲傷などを，整復術，ギプス・副木，マッサージ，罨法(あんぽう)，薬物塗布などにより治療する人。民間療法の〈ほねつぎ〉に相当。江戸時代以降整復師を柔道（柔術）の教師が兼業したことから〈柔道整復〉の名で呼ばれるようになった。従来〈あん摩マッサージ指圧師，はり師，きゅう師，柔道整復師等に関する法律〉で規制されていたが，柔道整復師に関する部分が切り離され，単独法として整備されて，1970年〈柔道整復師法〉が公布された。とくに養成施設への入所・入学に柔道の素養のあることが条件とされているのが特徴。
