One of China's minority groups. They live in the Bulang Mountains and the Xiding and Bada Mountains in Menghai County, Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province, and are also found in Yun County, Zhenkang, Gengma, Shuangjiang, Lancang, and Mojiang in the Lincang-Simao region. The population was 82,400 (1990). Bulang belongs to the Mon-Khmer family of Austroasiatic languages. They are called Bulang, Balang, Wu, Wa, Awa, and Puman by different names depending on the region. They are said to be descendants of the Pu people, and their origins are thought to lie in the Pu, Puzi, and Pu people that appear in Chinese literature from the Han dynasty onwards.
