A perennial plant of the orchid family (APG classification: Orchidaceae). It has a pseudobulb, one leaf and one flower stalk. The leaf is elliptical, 2.5-5 cm long, and purple on the underside. In May, a single flower opens slightly downward at the end of a flower stalk about 10 cm high. The corolla is about 3 cm in diameter and a beautiful pale pink color. The sepals and lateral petals are the same shape and open in a narrow lanceolate shape. The lip is a slipper-shaped pouch with a two-lobed spur. It grows under coniferous forests in the subalpine mountains, and is rarely found in Honshu north of the Chubu region. The basic species is widely distributed in the subarctic zone of the Northern Hemisphere. The name comes from the likeness of the swollen lip to the belly of Hotei.

ラン科（APG分類：ラン科）の多年草。偽鱗茎(りんけい)があり、1枚の葉と1本の花茎をつける。葉は楕円(だえん)形で長さ2.5～5センチメートル、裏面は紫色を帯びる。5月ころ、高さ約10センチメートルの花茎の先に、花を1個やや下向きに開く。花冠は径約3センチメートル、淡紅色で美しい。萼片(がくへん)と側花弁は同形、狭披針(きょうひしん)形で開出する。唇弁はスリッパ状の袋になり、2裂する距(きょ)がある。亜高山の針葉樹林下に生え、中部地方以北の本州にまれに分布する。基本種は北半球の亜寒帯に広く分布する。名は、膨れた唇弁を布袋(ほてい)の腹に見立てたもの。
