Prince Hozumi

A Man'yo poet from the end of Fujiwara-kyo to the early Nara period. The fifth son of Emperor Tenmu. His mother was Oonu no Iratsume, the daughter of Soga no Akae. He became the governor of the Daijokan in 705 (Keiun 2). In January 715, he was promoted to the rank of Ippon, and died in July of the same year. He was probably under 40 years old. He left behind four tanka poems in the Man'yoshu. He was in love with his half-sister, Princess Tajima, and wrote a lamentative poem hoping for her grave after her death, "Furu yuki wa ahanina furiso yonabari no ikaino oka no kan kara makuni" (Volume 2). In his later years, he loved Otomo no Sakanoue no Iratsume.

藤原京末から奈良時代初期の万葉歌人。天武天皇の第5子。母は蘇我赤兄の娘大蕤娘（おおぬのいらつめ）。705年(慶雲2)知太政官事。715年正月，一品に叙され，同年7月没。40歳未満か。《万葉集》に短歌4首を残す。異母妹但馬皇女（たじまのひめみこ）と恋愛し，皇女没後の墓を望む悲傷歌〈降る雪はあはにな降りそ吉隠（よなばり）の猪養（いかい）の岡の寒からまくに〉(巻二)がある。晩年，大伴坂上郎女（おおとものさかのうえのいらつめ）を愛した。
