A city in central Yamanashi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1889 and is the prefectural capital. The city center is located almost in the center of the Kofu Basin. In the past, the Kai Kokufu was located here and it was called Fuchu. After the construction of Takeda Shingen's mansion in 1519, it became the base of the Takeda clan. In the Edo period, Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu developed the castle town, and it developed as a post town and merchant town on the Koshu road, and Koshu raw silk and Inden were its specialties. National Route 20 and the Chuo Main Line run through the city, and the Minobu Line branches off here. In 1982, the Chuo Expressway was opened, improving access to highways, and the precious metal and glass polishing industries, which developed from the traditional crystal crafts, as well as electrical equipment, chemicals, and precision machinery industries have expanded into the city, and the value of manufactured goods shipped was 316 billion yen (2003), accounting for about 14% of the prefecture's shipping value. In rural areas, suburban vegetable and grape cultivation and wine brewing are thriving. The city is home to Takeda Shrine, which enshrines Takeda Shingen, the remains of the Takeda clan mansion (historic site), Yumura Onsen, Kofu Onsen, and Sekisuiji Onsen. The northern mountainous area that stretches to the Nagano Prefecture border is part of Chichibu Tama Kai National Park, and contains Shosenkyo Gorge (a special place of scenic beauty). In March 2006, Nakamichi Town in Higashi-Yatsushiro District and the northern part of Kamikuishiki Village in Nishi-Yatsushiro District were incorporated into the city. The city sustained damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 212.47 km2 . 198,992 people (2010).

山梨県中部の市。1889年市制。県庁所在地。中心市街は甲府盆地のほぼ中央にあり,古く甲斐国府が置かれ府中と呼ばれた。1519年武田信虎の館築造後武田氏の拠点となり,江戸期に入り柳沢吉保が城下町を整備,甲州道中の宿場町,商人町としても発展,甲州生糸,印伝を特産した。国道20号線,中央本線が通じ身延線が分岐する。1982年中央自動車道が通じて高速交通の便がよくなったため伝統ある水晶細工から発展した貴金属・ガラス研磨工業のほか電気機器・化学・精密機械工業も進出,製造品出荷額で3160億円(2003)を上げ,県の出荷額の約14%を占めている。農村部では近郊野菜・ブドウ栽培,ブドウ酒醸造が盛ん。武田信玄をまつる武田神社,武田氏館跡(史跡),湯村温泉・甲府温泉・積翠寺温泉があり,長野県境に続く北部山地は秩父多摩甲斐国立公園に属し,昇仙峡(特別名勝)がある。2006年3月東八代郡中道町,西八代郡上九一色村北部を編入。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。212.47km2。19万8992人(2010)。
