The prickly pear species was introduced to Europe in the 16th century. In Japan, the first record was the Haoju (Tounatsu) which appeared in Kaibara Ekiken's Wajiga (1688), and is thought to be the Oogatahouken (large sword) Opuntia maxima Mill. (illustration). All species except the prickly pear were introduced after the Tenpo era (1830-44).
