1864‐1943 German psychiatrist. Professor at the University of Freiburg, where he taught psychiatry and neuropathology, but was also a poet. He criticized Kraepelin's disease unit theory from the standpoint of syndrome theory (1912) and predicted that no matter how much pathological anatomy advances in the future, functional mental disorders will never be established as pure pathological types. He said that mental disorders are divided into two types: (1) functional mental disorders (endogenous psychoses) induced by congenital preformative syndromes, and (2) pathological reaction types or personality tendencies (hypochondrial, hysterical, neurasthenic, etc.) that are combinations of irregular symptoms.
