A French man of letters. Born into an old townsfolk family in Paris, he studied law and became a lawyer, but later joined a religious order. He became known as a man of letters from around 1645, and was a good student of the satirical poet Boileau, who excelled in satirical literature. He also had friends with such great writers as La Fontaine, Molière, and Racine, and was elected a member of the Académie Française in 1662. In 1666, he published a satirical novel, "Les d'un villeins", which realistically depicted the customs of Parisian townsfolk, and this became his masterpiece.

フランスの文学者。パリの古い町民の家に生まれ,法律を学んで弁護士になったが,のち宗門に入った。1645年ころから文人としても知られ,風刺文学を得意として,風刺詩人ボアローのよき先輩であった。またラ・フォンテーヌ,モリエール,ラシーヌらの大作家をも友とし,1662年にはアカデミー・フランセーズの会員に選ばれた。66年にパリの町人の風俗を写実的に描いた風刺小説《町人物語》を世に問い,これは彼の代表作となった。
