1619‐88 A French man of letters. Born into an old townsfolk family in Paris, he studied law and became a lawyer, but later joined a religious order. He became known as a man of letters from around 1645, and was a good student of the satirical poet Boileau, who excelled in satirical literature. He also had friends with such great writers as La Fontaine, Molière, and Racine, and was elected a member of the Académie Française in 1662. In 1666, he published a satirical novel, "Les d'un villeins", which realistically depicted the customs of Parisian townsfolk, and this became his masterpiece.
