Enomoto Kikaku

Japanese: 榎本其角 - えのもときかく

1661-1707 A haiku poet from the early Edo period.
Born July 17, 1660. Son of Takeshita Tojun. A senior disciple of Matsuo Basho. Began studying at the beginning of the Enpo era. In Tenna 3, he edited Minashikuri, which marked a period in the Basho style. In Genroku 7, he was present when Basho died in Osaka, and published a memorial collection of poems, Kareobana. He later promoted an urbane style of haiku that came to be known as the Sharaku style. Died February 30, 1760. Age 47. Born in Edo. Family name later changed to Takai. Given name was Kanken. Other names included Shinshi, Takao Shinsai, Rasha, and Kyorai-do. His works include Zodanshu.

寛文元年7月17日生まれ。竹下東順の子。松尾芭蕉の高弟。延宝のはじめ入門。天和(てんな)3年蕉風の一時期を画する「みなしくり」を編集。元禄7年大坂で芭蕉の死にたちあい,追善集「枯尾花」を刊行。のち洒落風とよばれる都会的な俳諧(はいかい)をおしすすめた。宝永4年2月30日死去。47歳。江戸出身。姓はのち宝井。名は侃憲。別号に晋子,宝晋斎,螺舎,狂雷堂など。著作に「雑談(ぞうだん)集」など。
