Born July 17, 1660. Son of Takeshita Tojun. A senior disciple of Matsuo Basho. Began studying at the beginning of the Enpo era. In Tenna 3, he edited Minashikuri, which marked a period in the Basho style. In Genroku 7, he was present when Basho died in Osaka, and published a memorial collection of poems, Kareobana. He later promoted an urbane style of haiku that came to be known as the Sharaku style. Died February 30, 1760. Age 47. Born in Edo. Family name later changed to Takai. Given name was Kanken. Other names included Shinshi, Takao Shinsai, Rasha, and Kyorai-do. His works include Zodanshu.
