In a broader sense, it is a collective term for the theories and techniques of measuring social behavior, human relationships, and group structure, corresponding to biometry and psychometry, etc. In a narrower sense, however, it is often used to refer to the theories and methods traditionally systematized by its advocate Moreno and his school.

According to Moreno, the configuration of human relationships and groups is a dynamic tension system of ever-changing attractions and repulsions between individuals, and it is thought that this creates a relatively stable structure depending on the degree of development of the individual's "spontaneity" and learning of "cultural roles." From this perspective, attempts were made at first to develop "group therapy" that would adapt patients to group life through diagnosis and training of spontaneity and role-playing, but at the same time, the systematization of sociometric theory of group structure and dynamics was attempted through the measurement and analysis of the above-mentioned tension system.

Analytical Methods

Moreno devised five main methods for analyzing human relationships and group structures: (1) acquaintance test, (2) sociometric test, (3) spontaneity test, (4) situational test, and (5) role-playing test. These are comprehensive techniques for exploring the depth and dynamics of human relationships and group structures, but (2) is the most widely used general analytical method. It is a method of probing an individual's choice and rejection behavior toward other members in a specific interaction situation (for example, friendships in leisure time) through a test. Therefore, unlike the guess-who test, which simply asks a person to name people they like and dislike, several tests are administered simultaneously for various situations.

The data is then spatially charted according to certain conventions (usually individuals are represented by circles, and choices and refusals are represented by solid and dashed lines, respectively). This is called a sociogram. Sociograms are useful for visually diagnosing individual personality traits, intragroup status, and leadership, as well as group structural traits, such as the degree of differentiation and stratification of subgroups, leadership structure, cohesion, group morale, and resistance to external pressure.

For ease of calculation, a matrix table is used, which is called a sociomatrix. As a measurement method based on this data, various sociometric indexes have been devised that relate to the status characteristics of members and the structural characteristics of groups, and attempts have been made to calculate the index for each using an operational formula. The basic formulas used are Ci/n-1 (the average number of choices received by each member) for individual characteristics, and Cg/n(n-1) (the ratio of the total number of actual choices to all possible choices) for group characteristics, and attempts have been made to measure various indices based on these.

Application and development

In terms of the application of sociometry, it is widely used in classrooms, workplaces, military organizations, local communities, etc., and is often used as information for reorganizing members and for community planning. As for technical developments, the main issues that have been raised include the development of the strength of choice analysis method, the development of matrix analysis method, the introduction of probability theory, and the refinement of test theory.

広義には、生物測定biometry、心理測定psychometryなどに対応して、社会行動、人間関係、集団構造に関する測定の理論や技術を総称し、社会測定法とも訳される。しかし狭義には、伝統的に、その唱道者モレノとその学派によって体系づけられた理論や方法をさす場合が多い。

　モレノによれば、人間関係や集団の成態configurationは、絶えず変化する個人間の牽引(けんいん)attractionと反発repulsionの力学的な緊張体系であり、それは個人の「自発性」の発達と「文化的役割」の学習の程度によって、相対的に安定した構造をつくりだすと考えられた。この観点から、最初は、自発性や役割演技（ロール・プレイング）の診断や訓練によって、患者を集団生活に適応させようとする「集団療法」の開発が試みられたが、同時に、前記した緊張体系の測定・分析を通して、集団の構造や動態に関する社会測定理論の体系化が意図されるに至った。

分析法

人間関係や集団構造の分析のための主要な方法として、モレノは、〔1〕知己テストacquaintance test、〔2〕ソシオメトリック・テストsociometric test、〔3〕自発性テストspontaneity test、〔4〕状況テストsituational test、〔5〕役割演技テストrole-playing testの五つの方法を考案した。これらは人間関係や集団構造の深層や動態を探る総合的な技法であるが、このうち〔2〕が一般的な分析法として多用されている。それは、特定の相互作用事態（たとえば余暇における交友関係）について、個人の他のメンバーに対する選択choiceと拒否rejectionの行動をテストによって打診する方法である。したがって、単に好きな人・嫌いな人をあげさせるゲス・フー・テストguess-who-testとは異なり、さまざまな事態についていくつかのテストが同時に施行されることになる。

　次に、データは一定の約束（普通、個人は円で、選択と拒否はそれぞれ実線と破線で示される）に従って空間的に図表化される。これをソシオグラムsociogramという。ソシオグラムは、個人のパーソナリティー特性、集団内地位、指導性などを、また集団の構造的特性、たとえば下位集団の分化や層化の程度、指導性の構造、凝集性、集団モラール、外圧に対する抵抗性などを、視覚的に診断するうえで有効である。

　また、計算の便宜のためにマトリックス表が用いられ、これをソシオマトリックスsociomatrixという。そのデータに基づく測定法としては、成員の地位特性や集団の構造特性に関するさまざまな指標sociometric indexが考案され、それぞれについての運算式による指数計算が試みられている。その基本定式には、個人的特性についてはCi/n-1（成員1人当りから受ける平均選択数）、集団的特性についてはCg/n(n-1)（現実の選択総数の可能なすべての選択数に対する比率）が用いられ、これらを基本として、さまざまな指標についての測定が試みられている。

応用と発展

ソシオメトリーの応用面では、学級集団、職場集団、軍隊組織、地域コミュニティなどに対して、多方面に活用されており、メンバーの編成替えや、コミュニティ計画の資料として用いられることが多い。また技術上の発展については、選択の強度解析法、マトリックス解析法の発展、確率論の導入、検定理論の洗練などが主要な課題として取り上げられている。
