Pops - Pops (English spelling)

It is an abbreviation and a common name for popular music or songs other than classical music. It is often simply called pop. In slang, it means "old man," but in the jazz and popular music worlds, it is used as a nickname for powerful leaders and important people. Paul Whiteman (1890-1967), the world-famous dance conductor from the 1920s to 1930s, and jazz giant Louis Armstrong were both called "pops." In the classical music world, pop concerts have been called light-hearted concerts since the 1850s, with a program that mainly features familiar masterpieces and semi-classical pieces, or movie music and other easy-going melodies.

いわゆるクラシック音楽以外のポピュラー・ミュージック、あるいはポピュラー・ソングを意味する略語であり、通称でもある。単にポップといわれる場合も多い。俗語では「おやじさん」の意味だが、ジャズ界やポピュラー音楽界では、とくに勢力のあるリーダーや大人物に対する愛称として使われる。1920年代から30年代にかけて世界的名声のあったダンス楽団の指揮者ポール・ホワイトマンPaul Whiteman（1890―1967）、ジャズの巨人ルイ・アームストロングが「ポップス」とよばれたことはその好例。なお、クラシック音楽界では、一般に親しまれている名曲とセミ・クラシック曲、あるいは映画音楽など肩の凝らないメロディを主とした番組による軽い音楽会を、1850年代からポップス・コンサートと称している。
