Heijiro Nakayama
Born: June 1871 (Meiji 4) in Kyoto
[Died] April 29, 1956. Fukuoka pathologist and archaeologist. Graduated from the medical department of Tokyo Imperial University, he taught pathology as a professor at Fukuoka Medical College, the predecessor of Kyushu University's Faculty of Medicine, while studying the actual state of Yayoi culture through research on ruins and artifacts in Kitakyushu. He calculated the relative age of ruins from bronze artifacts, and revealed that in the Yayoi period, society was based on rice farming, that bronze artifacts and polished stone tools were used, and that Western Han mirrors and Wang Mang coins were imported from China. He also conducted detailed research on exchanges with China.

病理学者,考古学研究家。東京帝国大学の医科を卒業し,九州大学医学部の前身である福岡医科大学の教授として病理学を担当,かたわら北九州の遺跡遺物の研究を通じて弥生文化の実態をきわめた。青銅器から遺跡の相対年代を算出,弥生時代に稲作農耕を基礎に社会が構成され,青銅器や磨製石器が使われ,中国から前漢鏡や王莽の貨泉が輸入されたことを明らかにし,また中国との交流についての緻密な研究を行なった。
