〘noun〙① (adjective) A strange thing that seems impossible in reality. Also, that state. Something suspicious. ※Sandaikaku-1, Kōnin 3 (812), September 26th, "The saints do not speak of strange things" [Haijō-Shichihatsu]② (━suru) Something that seems strange. Suspicious. ※Jiyu no Ri (1872), translated by Nakamura Masanao, 3 "Isn't it strange that the lowliness of the human heart has become public opinion in this day and age?"③ A monster. A phantom.

Kei-i [Mystery]

〘Noun〙 (adjective) ("Ke" is the Go-on pronunciation of "Kai" (mystery). Something mysterious. Something strange. Also, the thing itself or its state. Kaii. ※Genpei Seisuiki (before the 14th century) 16 "Now I have received an imperial command to calm the strange phenomenon ." ※Haiku poem, Shinhanatsumi (1784) " Omitsu's fragrance is more beautiful than ever, and she speaks in a peaceful manner, and I tell her that she has had such a wonderful experience."

〘名〙 (形動) (「け」は「怪」の呉音) あやしいこと。ふしぎであること。また、そのものや、そのさま。かいい。※源平盛衰記(14C前)一六「今勅命を蒙り怪異(ケイ)を鎮めんとす」※俳諧・新花摘(1784)「阿満(おみつ)いついつよりも、かほばせうるはしく、のどやかにものうちかたり、よべかくかくのけいありしとつぐ」
