Ma Mingxin (English spelling)

A Muslim leader active in Gansu and Qinghai during the Qianlong period of the Qing dynasty. Also written as Ma Mingxin. Sometimes called Ma Meishin. A native of Anding (Dingxi), Gansu Province. He studied in Tianfang (Mecca), where he absorbed Islamic doctrine and returned to China in 1761. He preached Protestantism among the Salar people in the Xunhua region of Qinghai Province, which came into conflict with traditional Chinese Islam. He was oppressed by local officials and rebelled in 1781 (the 46th year of the Qianlong era), besieging and attacking Lanzhou Castle, but was attacked by Qing troops and captured and killed in the same year.

中国，清代乾隆年間に甘粛･青海で活躍したイスラム教徒の指導者。馬明新とも書く。また〈まめいしん〉と呼ばれることもある。甘粛省安定(定西)の人。天方国(メッカを指す)に遊学し，イスラム教義を摂取して1761年に帰国し，青海省循化地方のサラール(撒喇爾)族のなかで新教を布教し，伝統的中国イスラムと対立した。そして地方官に圧迫されて1781年(乾隆46)に反乱を起こし，蘭州城を包囲攻撃したが，清軍に攻められ，同年に捕らえられて殺された。
