A priestly king of Salem in the patriarchal period mentioned in Genesis 14 and Psalm 110 of the Old Testament, and in the Epistle to the Hebrews 5-7 of the New Testament. His name means "king (Melech) is justice (Tzedek)," and Salem is the ancient name of Jerusalem. He is thought to have been handed down as an ideal, mythical king of Jerusalem before the Israelite period. This tradition was adopted by the Davidic dynasty and played a role in guaranteeing the legitimacy of David's kingship, and in the New Testament it was taken to prove the superiority of Christ's kingship and priesthood.
