Hosoga (thin moth) - Hosoga

Japanese: ホソガ(細蛾) - ホソガ
Hosoga (thin moth) - Hosoga
A general term for insects of the family Gracilariidae in the order Lepidoptera. This family includes small moths with a wingspan of 4 to 17 mm, and is found almost throughout the world. About 150 species are known in Japan. The wings are extremely long and slender, and the hind wings in particular are as thin as strings. The outer and rear edges of the forewings and the rear edge of the hindwings have hairs that are longer than the width of the wing. The antennae are thread-like and about the length of the forewings. Many species have beautiful forewing colors and patterns, and many species have a metallic sheen. Most larvae are leaf-mining, but some burrow under the skin of stems, branches, and fruits, and create galls.
