An American battleship. It is famous for the explosion that was one of the causes of the Spanish-American War. Launched in 1895. Overall length 98.84m, beam 17.37m, displacement 6650t. On January 25, 1898, it entered Havana port to defend American interests in Cuba, but on the morning of February 15 of the same year, it exploded and sank, leaving 260 dead and 47 injured. The cause of the explosion is unknown. At the time, Cuba was in the midst of a prolonged civil war against Spain, and criticism of the inhumane acts of the Spanish military in Cuba was growing in the United States. This incident further stimulated sympathy for the Cuban people and calls for intervention in Cuba, leading to the start of the Spanish-American War in April 1898.

Born: August 15, 1822 in Cologne
[Died] February 3, 1888, Cannes. British jurist and historian. Representative of the British historical school of law. Graduated from Cambridge University. Became professor of civil law at the same university in 1847, and published research on Roman law at the same time. From 1863 to 1869, he worked hard to compile Indian law as legal advisor to the Viceroy of India, and served as acting chancellor of the University of Calcutta. From 1869, he was professor of history and jurisprudence at Oxford University, and from 1887, he was professor of international law at Cambridge University. He built the foundations of legal anthropology through his research into ancient law and legal concepts in village communities. His main work is Ancient Law (1861).

イギリスの法学者，歴史学者。イギリスの歴史法学派の代表者。ケンブリッジ大学卒業。 1847年に同大学民法教授となり，同時にローマ法を研究発表し，63～69年インド総督法律顧問としてインド法の集成に尽力，カルカッタ大学の代理学長をつとめた。 69年よりオックスフォード大学の歴史学，法理学教授，87年よりケンブリッジ大学国際法教授を歴任。古代法や村落共同体における法的観念の研究を通して法人類学の基礎を築いた。主著に『古代法』 Ancient Law (1861) がある。
