...Later, in 1800 (Kansei 12) during the former Shogunate period, when the six Hakodate locations from Oyasu (currently Oyasu-cho, Toi-cho, Oshima Subprefecture) to Nodaoi (currently Nodaoi, Yakumo-cho, Oshima Subprefecture) were made "muranami" (administratively treated as equivalent to a "village"), the eastern border was effectively extended to Yamukushinai (currently Yamagoe, Yakumo-cho). On the border with Ezo, Kumaishi Bansho was established in the west, and Kameda Bansho (Yamagoe-nai Bansho after 1800) in the east, to control the entry and exit of Ainu and Japanese. The Japanese territories were called Nishizai in the west and Higashizai in the east, with the castle town of Matsumae (Fukuyama) at the center, but in terms of administrative districts they were divided into three areas: the area between Haraguchi Village and Chiriuchi Village, with the castle town of Matsumae at the center; the area between Kumaishi Village and Ishizaki Village (or Kosago Village), with Esashi at the center; and the area between Kikonai Village and Ishizaki Village (or the area including Oyasu and Nodaoi), with Hakodate at the center. Each area was governed by the magistrate of temples and shrines, the magistrate of Hiyama (Esashi), and the magistrate of Kameda (Hakodate). *Some of the terminology that refers to "Kameda Bansho" is listed below.
