Hydrangea macrophylla

Japanese: ガクアジサイ
Hydrangea macrophylla
A deciduous shrub of the Saxifragaceae family that grows in coastal areas such as southern Kanto, the Izu Peninsula, the Kii Peninsula, and southern Shikoku. The leaves are thick and obovate. It is the parent species of Hydrangea macrophylla, and is similar in general, but differs in that the five bisexual flowers, both sepals and petals, are gathered in the center of the inflorescence, and the decorative flowers are around the periphery. The flowers bloom in June and July, and the decorative flowers have four sepals and are slightly purple. The bisexual flowers are pale blue-purple. The similar Yamajisai grows in mountainous areas, has thin oval leaves, and usually white flowers. It is distributed from Honshu (mainly on the Pacific coast south of Fukushima Prefecture) to Kyushu. Tamajisai grows inflorescences that are initially wrapped in large bracts to form a globular shape, and grows mainly on the Pacific coast of Fukushima Prefecture to Gifu Prefecture. Both are used as garden trees.
