Obaku Art

Japanese:
Obaku Art
The arrival of the Obaku sect in the early Edo period played a major role in introducing the latest Chinese culture to Japan, and their influence in the field of art also extends to architecture, sculpture, painting, calligraphy, and crafts. In terms of architecture, Sufuku-ji, Fukusai-ji, Kofuku-ji, and other temples were built for the residents of Nagasaki. Representative relics include Sufuku-ji's Daiichihomon Gate (1644) and Daiyuhoden Hall (1646), and the designs and colors of Ming dynasty temple architecture by immigrant craftsmen give a strong exotic feel. Obaku temples were also introduced to Kyoto when the monk Ingen founded Manpuku-ji Temple in Uji (1661) under the patronage of the shogunate.
